(The following story was gathered from several sources, so I'm not sure what the true story is.)

Arland was built in 1884 by Victor Arland, a Frenchman who came to America in 1870. The town of Arland was a bloody place, with many people dying a violent death there.

William Gallagher was a tall, mean and vicious cowboy who worked for the Pitchfork Ranch. Belle worked as a prostitute in the saloon and dance hall in Arland where she got to know Gallagher, Blind Bill Hoolihan, Robert Parker (Butch Cassidy), Jack Bliss and other suspected members of a gang known as the “Woodriver Horse Thieves”. Belle became Gallagher's girl. In 1894, Gallagher was shot between the eyes by Bill Wheaton for beating Belle. Gallagher's friend, "Blind Bill" was then going to avenge Gallagher's death by killing Wheaton, however, Wheaton also killed him.

Wheaton was sentenced to 8 years in Wyoming State Penitentiary for the crime. The grave of Belle Drewry "The Woman in Blue" (1867 - 1897) was in the sage brush near Ghost Rock and has been moved to Old Trail Town 32 miles away in Cody. William Gallagher and "Blind Bill" Hoolihan was buried down the creek away from Arland and has also been moved to Old Trail Town.

Arland himself was shot in Red Lodge, Montana, in December 1889. The town of Arland continued to function in its notorious way for seven years after the death of Vic Arland.

Arland was credited with being the first of the frontier towns to be established in the Big Horn Basin. There are no known photos of Arland to this day.
